UV Aging Test Chamber
The ultraviolet aging test chamber simulates the ultraviolet portion of sunlight. The UVA-340 lamp can simulate the short-wave segment of sunlight. It is particularly suitable for comparing performance differences among different types of polymers and stabilizers. It is a lamp used for material correlation studies.
Features of the UV Aging Test Chamber
The UV aging test chamber provides two methods of humidity simulation. The most commonly used is the condensation method, which simulates outdoor moisture erosion. All QUV models can operate the condensation cycle. Since some application conditions also require the use of water spray to achieve realistic effects, certain models can operate both condensation and water spray cycles.
Condensation
In many outdoor environments, materials may be exposed to moisture for up to 12 hours each day. Studies have shown that dew is the primary factor contributing to outdoor moisture rather than rain. The aging test chambers simulate outdoor moisture erosion through a unique condensation feature. In the condensation cycle, water vapor is produced by heating the water pan at the bottom of the test chamber. The hot steam keeps the chamber at high humidity and temperature. In the chamber design, test specimens form the side walls of the chamber, with their backs exposed to ambient laboratory air. The cooling effect of the indoor air causes the surface temperature of the specimens to be a few degrees lower than the steam temperature, thus ensuring continuous condensation on the surface of the samples. This condensate is highly stable and pure distilled water.
Water Spray
In certain actual application conditions¡ªfor example, under sunlight when accumulated heat is rapidly dissipated by a sudden rain shower¡ªthe temperature of the material changes drastically, resulting in thermal shock. This thermal shock is a challenge for many materials. QUV¡¯s water spray feature can simulate thermal shock and/or stress corrosion.
Applicable Standards for UV Aging Test Chamber
Ultraviolet light is the main factor in the photo degradation of outdoor products. The fluorescent UV lamps in the aging chamber can simulate the critical short-wave ultraviolet light in sunlight and reproduce the physical performance aging of materials caused by light exposure. According to different test conditions, several types of UV lamps are available. Please refer to Q-Lab Technical Bulletin LU-8160: ¡°Lamp Selection¡± Application Guide.
